State Wrestling

The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (EBF) girls wrestling team made history at the IGHSAU State Wrestling Tournament on February 6th and 7th, securing a remarkable 6th place finish in Class 1A. This accomplishment reflects the hard work and dedication of the athletes and coaching staff.

Leading the charge was Miley Kirkpatrick (130), who battled her way to an impressive runner-up finish. Her determination and skill were on full display throughout the tournament. Georgia Smith (125) also had a fantastic showing, placing 4th.  Kate Krause (115) secured 7th place and Ella Ray (235) rounded out the podium finishes with an 8th place finish. Each of these student-athletes experienced placing at the state tournament for the first time. Miley, Kate, and Georgia are all returning next year.

Adding to the team’s depth and strength, four senior EBF wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament, showcasing the program’s continued growth. Abigail Durflinger (110) and Olivia Rupe (125) each won one match at the state tournament.  Chelsea Smith (155) and Atalissa Lobberecht (190) all earned their spots at state, highlighting the depth of talent and commitment within the program.

The success of the EBF girls wrestling program is remarkable. After an impressive inaugural sanctioned season in 2023-24, the team took tremendous strides in its second sanctioned year, competing at an even higher level. This progress is due in no small part to head coach Garrett Krause and the boy’s head coach Dimitri Boyer and the entire wrestling staff invested in the entirety of the EBF wrestling program.  The EBF community enthusiasm from fans, families, and peers have played a crucial role in propelling these young athletes forward.

Throughout the tournament, the team showcased great aggressiveness, whether in victory or defeat. The improvement in technical execution and mental preparation speaks volumes about the work ethic of the wrestlers and the guidance of the coaching staff.  Coach Krause has been instrumental in fostering a mindset of resilience and focus, understanding that wrestling is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one.

Wrestling is a sport where there is no place to hide when matches don’t go as planned, but the sheer exhilaration of winning tough bouts makes all the sacrifices worthwhile. The ability to manage the emotional highs and lows of a season as an entire team illustrated success for the entire EBF wrestling team.

As the superintendent of EBF, I could not be prouder of the girls wrestling program. The dedication, discipline, and competitive spirit displayed by our wrestlers are truly inspiring. Witnessing the hard-fought victories in the blood round and the electrifying semi-finals, particularly Miley’s incredible run, was an unforgettable experience. These young women have set a high standard for future EBF wrestlers.  I am excited to see what the future holds for this outstanding program.

Congratulations to the EBF girls wrestling team on an extraordinary season, and thank you to everyone who has supported them on this journey.
